NETWORK FOR CHILDREN’S RIGHΤS
“STEM Without Tag” Programme
As part of its long-standing collaboration with the Network for Children’s Rights, the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation, in cooperation with Eurobank, supported the “STEM Without Tag” educational programme, which aims to deconstruct gender stereotypes and encourage children to discover careers in the STEM sciences. The Programme, approved by the Ministry of Education, was addressed to children aged 9-13 years old, aiming to promote positive female role models in STEM fields and attract more children to related professions, through experiential activities implemented in primary and secondary schools, as well as in the Network’s Culture Lab. During the first phase of the Programme, interactive workshops were held with the goal of allowing children to express their ideas and perceptions around gender stereotypes and STEM sciences and to discuss their concerns with the Network’s educators. In the second phase, participants had the opportunity to discuss with four renowned women scientists and professionals, and ask them questions and queries that emerged during the workshops regarding their academic and professional careers. At the same time, the four women-role models shared their experiences in the STEM field, as well as information about their scope of work, the obstacles they encountered in their careers and the discrimination they experienced. The meetings were filmed in order to create videos aiming to promote women and gender equality in the STEM field. These videos consist useful educational material for approaching the aforementioned topic and have been used to carry out further activities in schools across Greece.
“Everyone can do the same jobs, regardless of their gender.”
Participant, 11 years old
“There are fewer women than men in my field, and this is something I notice not only in Greece, but also abroad, in countries where I have worked in the field of Technology. And that’s why I like to talk a lot about this industry to children in general, to show them that it’s a field for everyone.”

THE TIPPING POINT NPO
“Empowering Vocational Education Students” Programme
In the framework of its strategy to support, among others, initiatives aimed at upgrading Vocational Education and Training, the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation supported for the second consecutive year the successful programme “Empowering Vocational Education students” in the framework of its strategic partnership with The Tipping Point NPO. During the school year 2022-2023, the Programme was extended to more Vocational High Schools (EPAL) across Greece, offering students the opportunity to discuss via videoconference with successful professionals-mentors from their fields of interest, who shared useful career advice on the opportunities and alternatives offered by technical professions. The aim of the Programme is to prepare students to successfully enter the modern job market, by strengthening their technical training, as well as their emotional empowerment. In that framework, students had the chance to develop in an experiential way, important soft skills such as critical thinking, self-awareness, problem solving and goal-setting, and to gain greater confidence in their abilities and future career goals.
“I believe that this initiative is of great importance for the future of our students. Firstly, it connects High School education with work, i.e. the fields in which the students want to work when they finish school. Secondly, it provides them with the opportunity to meet in real life and get advice from experts, as well as to see their workplace and its difficulties, or to take an interest in something they didn’t know in the first place. The various professionals who participate in the Programme provide us with a valuable source of motivation and inspiration for the workplace, i.e. orientation and ideas for the students’ future. Lastly, the mentors guide the students and facilitate discussions with various professionals.”

REGENERATION
“DigiYouth Initiative 4.0” Programme
The “ReGeneration DigiYouth Initiative 4.0” training programme, a Microsoft partnership with ReGeneration (an initiative by Global Shapers Athens Hub NPO), aims at the holistic professional and personal development of young people, at linking and successfully combining their skills with the ever-changing demands of the modern labour market and at increasing the employability of youth. The programme focuses on empowering young people (up to 29 years old), especially women, who are significantly underrepresented in the field of Technology, by strengthening their soft and digital skills (up/reskilling) and reducing gender inequalities in the labour market. The John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation supported as a Strategic Donor the fourth round of the Programme, which was implemented in 2023 and included 3 online training Academies on the following topics related to digital transformation:
“With a core vision of democratising opportunities for young people in our country, since 2014 ReGeneration has been established as the largest training and employment programme for young graduates in Greece. In our relentless effort to broaden our social impact, the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation, recognising both our contribution so far, as well as the prospects that lie ahead, has warmly supported the organisation’s initiatives and more specifically the highly successful Academies that we are implementing in collaboration with Microsoft, starting in 2020, as part of the “Gr for Growth” initiative. Dozens of young people were trained in key areas of the technological market, while at the same time being immersed in the significance of acquiring soft skills that, based on studies and research on a global scale, are now emerging as more important even than technical ones. The absorption of our graduates by the labour market confirms both the right implementation of our already established procedures and the need of the ecosystem for a substantial interconnection, thus overcoming the challenges associated with the 4th Industrial Revolution.”

GREEK YOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Musical Performances & Educational Activities
Τhe John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation, founding donor for the establishment of the Greek Youth Symphony Orchestra (GYSO), supported the Orchestra’s operation and the organisation of its concerts and educational activities during the 2022-2023 artistic season. GYSO, which was founded by conductor Dionysis Grammenos and is a member of the European Federation of National Youth Orchestras (EFNYO) and the MusXchange programme, comprises young musicians from all over Greece, as well as Greek musicians living abroad. Its primary goal is to identify, guide, train and promote talented young musicians in the symphonic and operatic repertoire under the guidance of internationally renowned soloists and principals of Greek and major European orchestras. Participation in the orchestra is free of charge, following an audition, while all travel and accommodation expenses of the musicians are covered, through the resources that the orchestra secures. The sixth artistic season of GYSO included a full programme of concerts in Greece and abroad, as well as important collaborations with renowned musicians and orchestra conductors, culminating in GYSO’s participation in the international music festival for youth orchestras “Young Euro Classic”, which took place in August 2023 at the Konzerthaus in Berlin. The performance by GYSO constituted the opening concert of the principal part of the Festival, during which three emblematic compositions of the symphonic repertoire by Liszt, Brahms and Grøndahl were performed. Additionally, the concert featured the internationally renowned trombonist Achilles Liarmakopoulos as a guest soloist.
At the same time, another main characteristic of GYSO’s activity is the implementation of educational actions, aiming at introducing young people to symphonic music and the values it embodies. In this context, starting in 2021, with the support of the Foundation, GYSO has been implementing the innovative activity “ΕλΣΟΝ VR”. Through the use of state-of-the-art virtual reality technologies and specially designed 360° audiovisual materials from live orchestra performances, students from all educational levels have the opportunity to discover the world of classical music in an experiential way. The “ΕλΣΟΝ VR” mask allows students to wander around the orchestra’s young musicians during the concert, as they performe important works from the repertoire of composers such as Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, Weber and Schubert. In addition, as part of special educational workshops, participants have the opportunity to meet the performers of a concert in person and watch them rehearse, experiencing the vibe and challenges of a professional performance in real time.
“My participation in GYSO has been a gift for me. A gift of experiences, moments and people that I will remember forever. Every GYSO project, from the rehearsals to the concert, is special, offering us the opportunity to engage with moments and emotions that are particularly powerful and memorable. I would like to make a special mention of the relationships that are formed within the orchestra. New friends and relationships are made, and they last outside of the orchestra. Bright people, full of passion and power, coming together to create magical and dreamy moments. And what unites us is music. I can only be grateful for the experiences, the moments, the people...”

“GYSO has been a tremendous opportunity for artistic development during its dynamic course in recent years. The orchestra has given me the opportunity to immerse myself in the symphonic repertoire and to grow as a musician. The chamber music projects are particularly important to me, as they are a part of our work that I love very much, through which one can gain a lot of stimulation and information, and eventually experience each work from a different perspective than one had imagined. Every artist who participates in GYSO tests their potential, develops their collaborative skills, exchanges ideas and experiences through rehearsals, workshops and the specialised seminars they attend. In this way, GYSO strengthens our musical empathy, becoming a great school for the artistic life of our country.”

NERAIDA FLOATING MUSEUM
Operation of the Museum
The Neraida Floating Museum is berthed at Flisvos Marina and admission is free for the general public. Its visitors have the opportunity to tour the vessel and get to know the Museum’s collection, which tells both the story of the vessel itself, namely the passenger ship “Neraida”, one of the symbols of Greek coastal navigation which sailed in the Saronic Gulf from 1950 to 1974, as well as the chronicle of its reconstruction into a modern and seaworthy floating museum. A second central narrative of the exhibition is dedicated to the business career of its owner, John Latsis, which runs through the entire 20th century.
Educational Programmes & Activities
Seeking to actively participate in school life and remain close to the student and teaching community throughout Greece, the Neraida Floating Museum carried on with the implementation of a diverse range of activities, both on-site and online, targeted at primary school students. In this framework, in 2023:
In 2023 the Museum participated in the anniversary events for the celebration of the International Museum Day with the theme “Museums, Sustainability and Well-being”. By choosing this particular theme, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) aimed at highlighting the potential of museums as trusted institutions and agents of sustainable development and improvement of the quality of life for the society as a whole. In this context, the Neraida Floating Museum designed and implemented a series of free actions for children and adults mainly focusing on the ancient art of wooden shipbuilding, an artform with a longstanding tradition in Greece, which, however, in recent years is under threat and at risk of extinction.
“In the future I would like ‘NERAIDA’ to remain intact, so that other kids can see what I saw - and I liked it very much.”

EGG – ENTER•GROW•GO
Business Incubator and Accelerator Programme for Female Enterpreneurship
Aiming at strengthening the Greek start-up ecosystem and bridging the gender gap in research and innovation, the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation supported the “Mini Acceleration Programme”, a targeted two-month acceleration programme, implemented in the framework of the business accelerator “egg – enter•grow•go”. The Programme aims to address the phenomenon of low female representation in various business, academic and research fields, and to attract more women to STEM technologies, by providing multi-level support to research teams with at least 30% participation of female researchers. Two cycles of the “Mini Acceleration Programme” were implemented with the Foundation’s support. In that framework, the participating research teams had access to a personalised curriculum, including skills development workshops, mentoring sessions and networking opportunities within a dynamic entrepreneurial community in Greece and abroad. Through the Programme, participants had the chance to familiarise themselves with core concepts of entrepreneurship and strategies for the business development of their innovative ideas, gain valuable know-how and connect their research work with the real market. The Programme concluded with the organisation of a pitching event, which gave the participating teams the opportunity to present their idea to a wide audience of investors and professionals from different sectors.
“A non-negotiable objective of Eurobank’s business accelerator ‘egg – enter•grow•go’ is to support female representation in research and innovation. Through this specialised two-month mentoring programme for female researchers and students, we aim not only to strengthen the representation of women in science, but also to cultivate a thriving ecosystem that will support the development of innovative entrepreneurship in our country.”

Start-up Empowerment Programe
“ClimAccelerator Greece” is an entrepreneurial empowerment programme that aims to create a strong network of professionals active in the field of green and circular economy promoting the development of sustainable, regenerative and innovative solutions to tackle the climate crises and protect the environment. The Programme, which was implemented for the third year in collaboration with EIT – Climate KIC and with the support, among others, of the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation, started in April 2023 with the organisation of a two-day Hackathon, under the scientific supervision of the National Technical University of Athens, aiming to create the right environment for the acceleration of socially and technologically innovative ideas. Through the Hackathon, 10 start-ups were selected to participate in the first cycle of the Programme and were supported through training workshops on innovative business tools, personalised mentoring and networking opportunities with experts and executives from environmental organisations and businesses. In September 2023, the “Demo Day” competitive stage of the Programme took place, during which 7 out of 10 teams presented their ideas during a short pitching session, evaluated based on business sustainability criteria with emphasis on environmental and social impact. Greek start-ups Apollo Green Solutions, Rhoe, and Promilist stood out for their innovative eco business solutions, received cash prizes of €9,000, and qualified for the second stage of the Programme, where they were trained on investment readiness by participating in masterclasses, consulting and networking sessions with investors.
“We started with a rough idea of how to democratise renewable energy solutions. Through ‘ClimAccelerator Greece 2023’ we managed to address the right market, shape our business model and increase our Technology Readiness Level (TRL). ‘ClimAccelerator Greece 2023’ helped us to become popular in the market and to create a wide network of potential investors, talents and partners. It also gave us confidence, trust and the right environment to implement our idea, and helped us accelerate and grow though valuable feedback from mentors and experts, as well as continuous training. It was really the reason why I decided to become a full-time entrepreneur.”

RESEARCH CENTRE FOR THE HUMANITIES
Research Programmes and Activities
Once more, in 2023, the John S. Latsis Public Beneft Foundation has kept providing its support to the operation and multifaceted work of the Research Centre for the Humanities (RCH), the main purpose of which is the support and funding of research in the Humanities through a wide range of activities, in order to serve as a springboard for young scientists who are preparing their own research initiatives. In addition, RCH organises workshops, conferences and meetings with the aim of further disseminating research results to both the scientific community and the general public.
In 2023, the development of the RCH Digital Library progressed. The RCH Digital Library is an innovative publishing endeavour of RCH in collaboration with the National Documentation Centre. Aiming to promote the free dissemination of knowledge, RCH has launched a new open-access digital platform for scientific publications in the field of Humanities, addressed to both authors and readers, which incorporates innovative design and functional elements. Additionally, a new research programme entitled “NORMED” was launched, which aims at enhancing our understanding of modern and contemporary European history by viewing it through a poly-centric lens that takes into account two of its constitutive regions, namely the Nordic/Baltic region and the Mediterranean. Through a comparative reflection of these regions and taking into consideration their cultural, historical and social borders, this project aims to highlight their similarities bringing together scholars in order to exchange ideas and building a sustainable and productive research network that will lead to concrete research outcomes.
Finally, fulfilling its main purpose of supporting research in the field of Humanities, the RCH announced the 2nd Public Call for the “Research Fellows” initiative, which allows post-doc researchers to join RCH and receive scientific guidance, practical and technical support, as well as financial support during the development of their research proposals. The aim of this initiative is to create a community that shares common objectives, exchanges ideas and develops activities based on mutual support and collaboration.
“Technological developments in the field of information technology and the Internet have allowed, for the first time, the element of interactivity and interaction to be present in the media and thus have made possible the active participation of users. This opens up new prospects for participation, collectivity and democratisation of traditional knowledge and information systems. This new reality, enables open and free access to knowledge –which is strongly supported by the RCH– giving both researchers the opportunity to publicise their results, as well as the general public and specialised audiences the chance to have direct access to studies that are carried out at the same time. This opportunity is of key importance, especially for the humanities, which are no longer exclusively intended for academic use. Rather, they contribute to public discourse, thus demonstrating their usefulness and relevance in an era of multiple and multi-level crises. Finally, free and open access knowledge via the internet enables, for the first time, remote communities, either within Greece or abroad, and people with mobility difficulties, to come into contact with scientific content of high quality and value.”

“DIAZOMA” ASSOCIATION
“D-HUB” Incubator
As part of its strategy in supporting innovative initiatives that promote sustainable development, the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation has developed a long-term partnership with the “DIAZOMA” Association, supporting its overall work, and in particular the operation of the “D-HUB” incubator. The Association aims to promote contemporary cultural creation and to place cultural and natural monuments at the very centrer of society, connecting them with sustainability, entrepreneurship and the digital world. In this context, “DIAZOMA” has designed and implements holistic programmes, such as “Cultural Routes and Parks”, the “POLIS” Programme, the “Avenues of Nature and Culture” Programme, the “Reconstruction Plan for Northern Evia” and the “Reconstruction Plan for Evros”. Two pioneering initiatives are operating to ensure the efficient operation and sustainability of these programmes: the business cluster and the Destination Management and Marketing Organisation (DMO), along with the “D-HUB” incubator, which provides integrated support for all these initiatives. Through “D-HUB”, the necessary know-how, guidance, and support is provided to Regions and Municipalities, enabling them to successfully implement coordinated programmes tailored to their respective territories. In accordance with the principles of the dual transition (green and digital), “D-HUB” serves as a technical consultant to the advancement of the soft actions (marketing, digital applications, entrepreneurship, operational entity) of the aforementioned programmes currently underway in the country.
“The Region of Central Greece has included the Avenue of Nature and Culture ‘OEDIPUS’ in the Regional Programme 21-27, as part of a wider project of holistic initiatives it implements, designed in line with the philosophy of the European Union to facilitate the dual transition (green and digital) and innovation. Thanks to the support of ‘D-HUB’, the necessary actions matured in time to be eligible for the control of the European Union, leading to the future implementation of actions that will significantly upgrade the area, such as: restoration of theatres, promotion of the cultural and natural wealth of the Region of Central Greece.”

“Protovoulia ‘21”: Climate Change and the Environment
“Protovoulia ‘21*” was established in 2018 by the most important Public Benefit Foundations in Greece along with the National Bank of Greece on the occasion of the bicentennial of the Greek Revolution, organising numerous actions in Greece and abroad in partnership with scientific, academic, cultural and social institutions. With the successful completion of the aforementioned actions, “Protovoulia ‘21” moved on its second phase of collaborative initiatives, focusing on the implementation of actions addressing the issue of Climate Change and the Environment. These actions, which have been undertaken by the members of “Protovoulia ‘21” and have begun to be implemented, are linked to all aspects of the effects of climate change: Health, Education, Culture, Air Pollution, Food Insecurity, the Sea, Law, Natural Disasters and the Protection of Cultural Heritage.
In particular, the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation supports, among other actions:
“In my opinion, ‘Act for the Planet’ is an innovative programme as it addresses the critical and important issue of Climate Change while integrating STEM education into the educational process. All this is implemented through experiential and team-based teaching techniques. The on-site training I received proved to be very important and useful, while the educational material published on the Programme’s platform is scientifically complete and instructive.”

“The most important feature of ISEC is the multi-dimensional education and discussion between faculty and students from different disciplines, as the environmental and climate crisis is complex requiring a multi-level approach both in research and its response. The frequency of wildfires is expected to increase, with significant consequences for local communities and our health due to our increased exposure to air pollutants, and longer-term consequences even for our mental health. With ISEC, we want to turn Greece into a point of reference and interaction for scientists who are called upon to find solutions.”

NEW AGRICULTURE NEW GENERATION NPO
“Queen Rearing: Utilisation, Rescue and Genetic Improvement of Bees in the Region of Evia” Programme
Acting as a catalyst for innovation in the agri-food ecosystem of the country, the organisation “New Agriculture New Generation” aims to create employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for young people in the agri-food sector, with the ultimate goal of revitalising and developing the primary production sector. With the ecological disaster that occurred in Evia due to the wildfires of 2021 in mind, and with the support, among others, of the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation, the training and consultancy programme “Queen Rearing: Utilisation, Rescue and Genetic Improvement of Bees in the Region of Evia” was implemented in 2023; an initiative that seeks to transform the beekeeping landscape and support beekeeping communities across Greece. The Programme, implemented under the scientific guidance of a team of professors from the Agricultural University of Athens, aimed to produce high-quality and more resilient bee colonies through the optimisation of endemic genetic material, the development of a specialised professional activity that would offer new employment opportunities for beekeepers, and the enhancement of the biodiversity of the region. Being a unique practice at a European level, the Programme included two implementation phases: a) the training of queen beekeepers on proper beekeeping practices, the cell vaccination procedure in the field, the current legislative framework and the impact of climate change on beekeeping activity, and b) the implementation of vaccinations in the beehives of the beneficiaries-professionals in Evia, who also participated in experiential demonstrations and became familiar with modern techniques for producing quality queen bees.
“Through the Queen Rearing Programme I was able to connect in a meaningful and constructive way with the beekeepers in my area, and together we all became more effective in our work, taking advantage of the specialised training offered to us through the Programme. I am very proud of the colleagues who embraced this innovative effort and I hope it will serve as an example to be applied universally in Greece.”

MEDITERRANEAN INSTITUTE FOR NATURE AND ANTHROPOS – MEDINA
“Terra Graeca: Small Farm to Market” Programme
With a vision of building a society that promotes the harmonious coexistence of man and nature, the Mediterranean Institute for Nature and Anthropos (MedINA) implements innovative initiatives aimed at the well-being of local communities as productive and healthy agroecosystems, by protecting, preserving and promoting their natural and cultural heritage. Under this scope, with the support of the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation, the programme “Terra Graeca: Small Farm to Market” was implemented, which aims to empower farmers in Lemnos and Kythera in multiple aspects and to foster the sustainable development of the agri-food identity of these islands. The purpose of the Programme is to co-create an integrated model of production, standardisation and distribution of products in Lemnos and Kythera, ensuring the economic viability of small producers who adhere to approved standards of traditional agricultural management and have received MedINA’s certification “Terra Vita – Agricultural Tradition and Biodiversity”, and preserving biodiversity through the prudent use of natural resources. To achieve these objectives, actions were implemented in three interconnected axes: promoting the “Terra Vita” certification and certified products in national and international markets, training producers on the opportunities offered by small-scale vertical integration of production (on-farm artisanal processing), and developing model agritourism experiences in farms open to visitors. As part of these actions, a short food supply chain was developed, connecting certified olive oil producers from Kythera with German consumers, while producers from Lemnos participated in experiential educational workshops on the creation of agroecological businesses and models of agri-food tourism.
“I have been helped in many ways by MedINA and the seminars; I gained knowledge that I will apply to my work over time. Through the Programme, we learn what is happening in other places and get inspiration.”

HELLENIC SOCIETY FOR THE PROTECTION OF NATURE
“Climate Era” Forum
In September 2023, the “Climate Era” Forum was held at the B & M Theocharakis Foundation for the Fine Arts & Music, organised by the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature (HSPN) with the participation of distinguished speakers from Greece and abroad, aiming to highlight the importance of environmental education for the new generation, society and the economy. The Forum, which was organised with the support of the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation in the framework of HSPN’s series of educational activities entitled “Protection of Nature Lab”, highlighted the need for a wider and more substantial environmental education and the development of actions for the promotion of sustainability based on modern international standards in order to address the effects of climate change more effectively. In addition, the results of the nationwide survey conducted by Metron Analysis for the HSPN on “Trends of society and citizens regarding the Climate Crisis in Greece and the World” were presented, aiming to capture the perception and connection of the Greeks with the natural environment, as well as the challenges associated with climate change. The survey revealed that the perception and awareness regarding climate change in Greece is increasing significantly, although it is linked to the world’s prevailing conditions, while high rates of “climate anxiety” –distress related to the consequences of climate change– were recorded.
“It appears that the impacts of climate change are occurring faster and are more intense than predicted, with devastating consequences, while current efforts to address them are lagging far behind in speed, scale and ambition. It is time for all of us to take on the cost of saving the planet –individual, social, economic and political– and take action to change our lifestyle and the system around us. The catalysts for action are education, information and awareness. We believe in the triptych of cooperation – coordination – participation and such an example is the support we received from the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation for the implementation of our initiative. There is a need of a substantial and comprehensive effort, because we are running out of time.”

Circular Economy Community Actions
Aiming to promote circular economy and participatory sustainable urban development through active citizenship, “InCommOn” organisation supports local communities in their transition to a more circular life model. In this context, in 2023, with funding from the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation, the action entitled “Kafsimo” was implemented, aiming at the collection, utilisation and conversion of coffee residues into biofuels, along with the environmental programme entitled “FoodTreasure” aimed at raising awareness and educating the school community on the reduction of food waste and the reuse of organic waste. The actions were implemented in the Municipalities of Petralona and Papagos-Holargos achieving a significant social and environmental impact, aiming at adopting of new habits for the proper management of resources and energy at local level. As part of the “Kafsimo” action, employees of catering businesses were informed about the necessity of collecting and recycling coffee grounds and the daily practices that lead to the reduction of their ecological footprint. At the same time, through the “FoodTreasure” project, primary school students and teachers participated in hands-on workshops and discovered the benefits of converting organic waste into soil improver resulting from the composting process.
“We have many other programmes at school, but the brown bin is the highlight! I found the InCommOn workshop excellent; it was a hands-on introduction to composting on a smaller scale. The children got involved in the process with great enthusiasm and got to interact with the earthworms of composting, which was great. We implemented activities from the “FoodTreasure” educational programme and the children themselves wanted to learn more and were led to a scientific approach to the phenomenon, gaining an important basis for their physics and chemistry lessons, as well as for their future knowledge in environmental issues. In fact, the children of the class have written an encouraging text on the use of brown bins in the neighbourhood, which was published in the school’s online newspaper.”

Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation Unit – 2nd Department of Propedeutic Internal Medicine NKUA
In 2023, with a donation from the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation, the expansion and modernisation of the Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation Unit of the 2nd Department of Propedeutic Internal Medicine NKUA of the Hospital was carried out. This donation has allowed for the addition of modern medical equipment to the Unit in response to the increased needs of the Transplantation Laboratory. Moreover, part of the existing Unit has been reconfigured, allowing for the creation of two additional inpatient wards to support Hematopoietic Cell Transplants and overall improvement of the Unit’s functionality.
“The creation of two additional specially equipped transplantation wards and the enhancement of the Transplantation Laboratory with state-of-the-art, high-tech equipment will enhance the Unit’s capacity and will allow for the provision of high-quality healthcare services to more patients. In particular, the two new wards will allow for the administration of specialised treatment, such as allogeneic stem cell transplants, to about twenty additional patients per year, patients suffering from very serious and complicated diseases, such as hematological malignancies.”

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit – 3rd Pediatric Clinic NKUA
At the same time, the donation for the upgrading of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) was completed in 2023, which included the renovation of the three main rooms and the supply of necessary medical equipment. The donation was implemented in the framework of the 4th cycle of the “Collaborating for Health” programme, a joint initiative of the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation and the Greek Shipowners’ Social Welfare Company SYN-ENOSIS. The Programme, which has been implemented since 2018, consists in the financing of small and medium-scale projects, its aim being to meet urgent needs of the Public Health sector and to improve the services of healthcare providers in Greece, through the supply of medical equipment and the upgrading of their infrastructure.
“From my perspective as a pediatric infectious disease specialist, I would like to emphasise the contribution of this donation to the prevention of nosocomial infections and sepsis, which are significant factors in mortality and morbidity for these particularly vulnerable young patients. Although I am proud to report that, according to studies conducted over the past five years, the healthcare staff of the Unit consistently represents the leading team in adhering to hygiene measures throughout our Hospital, the reconstruction of the Unit with the installation of the medical columns has further enhanced the care of each newborn and thus significantly reduced the likelihood of transmission of microbial agents among hospitalised newborns.”

MDA HELLAS – MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY ASSOCIATION
Support for the Operation of the Special Unit for Neuromuscular Diseases
Following the allocation of a dedicated space within the Latsio Burn Centre at the “Thriasio” General Hospital of Eleusis for the establishment of the Special Unit for Neuromuscular Diseases of the MDA Hellas Association, the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation supported the operation of the Unit within the year 2023, covering the necessary staffing costs and ensuring its proper operation. In the fully accessible and equipped Unit, four outpatient clinics (Neurology, Cardiology, Pulmonology and Orthopedics) operate according to the standards of the Centers of Expertise for Rare Diseases, providing adults suffering from neuromuscular diseases with a holistic framework of medical care. The multidisciplinary team of the Unit, consisting of healthcare professionals from various specialties, delivers high-quality diagnostic and care services, systematically monitoring patients and offering psycho-social support to both patients and their families, aiming to improve their quality of life.
“The new Neuromuscular Diseases Unit of MDA Hellas at the Thriasio Hospital is a focal point for my health and quality of life. Unfortunately, the complexity of my condition requires the cooperation of specialised scientists, not only for healing, but also for predicting the development of a problem. The new Unit does just that: it covers, through a team of scientists of different specialties (such as cardiologist, pulmonologist, neurologist, physiotherapist, etc.), any immediate need I have, not only through examinations, therapeutic intervention and application of preventive methods, but also through personal contact and psychological support! I no longer have to search for doctors and coordinate specialties and appointments, nor do I need to travel long distances to their clinics. Now, in a modern, friendly space, I am systematically monitored by a specialised scientific team of doctors who treat me holistically, not just as a case mentioned in the literature, looking beyond my disease and providing me a reliable therapeutic approach.”

“When I was diagnosed with cancer in 2014, I can’t describe the fear and despair I felt; I didn’t know what to do. The first day I left the hospital, the GALILEE team came to the house. As soon as I opened the door... what was I to see? The Director, doctors, nurses and social workers. I have no words to describe it. From that moment to this day they have been like a ‘rock’ by my side. Thankfully, today I am fine! For me personally, GALILEE is a gift from God, it is a source of life, an open embrace with so much love.”

In addition, the selected organisations took part in free capacity building activities, funded and implemented by Social Dynamo, the NGO hub of the Bodossaki Foundation, aiming to increase the efficiency and sustainability of the organisations, with a focus on learning, professional support and networking.
For the period 2023-2024, the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation supported the implementation of the following initiatives:
“Our team received funding for the implementation of the project entitled ‘Buddies at work: Inclusion in the Workplace’, through which 8 people on the autism spectrum were empowered, receiving the appropriate preparation for their integration into the work environment and first contact with potential employers. Similarly, 50 employees within the partner company Teleperformance Greece were informed and trained on issues related to autism and better management in the workplace. Without this support we would not have been able to take our first steps in the field of supported employment, which we want and now believe we can further develop.”

“Through the ‘CoopAbility’ project, people with disabilities were given the opportunity to develop work readiness skills and gain in-depth knowledge of social entrepreneurship. Thirty trained individuals, three best practices, four trainers with disabilities, two inspiring social partners and a freely available training manual. What brought us most joy was the composition of the manual, created with professionalism and care to be accessible to people with intellectual disabilities, special educational needs, and visual impairments.”

“At Off Stream, our vision is the equal participation of People with Disabilities in the experience of Art, Culture, and consequently in all aspects of daily life. The support we received from the Foundation through the ‘Points of Support’ programme enabled us to implement an innovative programme for the inclusion of people with sensory impairments in the museum experience. It helped us develop an original methodology for inclusive audience activities, to share and co-create inclusively, and ultimately to take another step closer to our vision!”

GREEK ASSOCIATION FOR ASPERGER’S SYNDROME
JobsLink: Employment Integration Programme for People on the Autism Spectrum
The Greek Association for Asperger’s Syndrome aims to inform and raise awareness about the diversity of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), High-Functioning Autism or Asperger Syndrome, to promote their social acceptance, as well as their vocational training and employment. In this context, with the support, among others, of the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation, the Association implements the support programme for the integration of people on the Autism Spectrum into the labour market through the innovative interactive job search platform JobsLink. The platform, unique in its kind, offers a structured and properly staffed system for connecting candidates with ASD diagnosis and employers through trained mentors-mediators. The aim of the Programme is, on the one hand, to highlight the unique skills of people with High-Functioning Autism and to educate businesses in order to alleviate the reservations and overcome the hesitancy of potential employers and, on the other hand, to provide practical support within the work environment to both parties. In the framework of the Programme, information activities were carried out and a special “Mentor’s Handbook” was created; the mentor’s role is particularly important, as it serves as the link between the prospective employee and the employer, providing support at all stages of the selection, recruitment and adaptation process of the employee to the new professional role.
“I think if it wasn’t for the ‘JobsLink’ programme I would still be struggling on my own and would never manage to find a job. I also know that my mentor will be there for me every step of the way, especially in the first few days, which helps me manage the stress of adjusting. I hope that other young men and women with autism can find a job like I did and make the most of their talents.”

AMIMONI, PANHELLENIC ASSOCIATION OF PARENTS, GUARDIANS AND FRIENDS OF PEOPLE WITH VISUAL IMPAIRMENT AND ADDITIONAL DISABILITIES
Early Intervention Programme
Having a 30-year long activity in the field of social welfare and integration, “AMIMONI” provides treatment, care and lifelong education to children and adults with vision impairments and additional disabilities, aiming at their independence and social integration, empowering and supporting -at the same time- their families. It is the only organisation in Greece that specialises and deals with this target group, while in the context of its activities, “AMYMONI” implements the “Early Intervention Programme”, a holistic programme for infants and pre-school children (up to 6 years old) with blindness, low vision or a diagnosed visual perception problem. The Programme aims to provide early assessment and utilisation of children’s potential through educational activities, as well as counseling and support for their parents. This innovative Programme, which was implemented in 2023 also with the support of the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation, is offered in the child’s natural environment through home sessions, based on an individualised educational support framework, and contributes to the strengthening of the child’s learning stimuli received, as well as to the emotional connection with the parents, with the ultimate goal of their developmental progress and autonomy.
“Ιn 2017 our daughter Artemis was born with congenital cataracts. Soon we found out there was a gene mutation that was affecting her vision and her nervous system, causing developmental delays. Thankfully our concern led our way to ‘AMIMONI’; we attended the ‘Early Intervention Programme’ that helped us significantly. The Programme’s team of specialists provided us with all the necessary information about our child’s condition and guidance about how to provide her with the best medical care available. Most importantly of all, though, is that at ‘AMYMONI’, they didn’t treat Artemis as a medical case, but as a human being with medical needs. The specialists visited our home, played with Artemis, and brought her new special toys to help exercise her vision, while also guiding us on how we can help her gain more confidence in herself and independence. Their help has been priceless.”

ANIMASYROS INTERNATIONAL ANIMATION FESTIVAL
Educational Animation Workshop for People with Disabilities
Aiming to support initiatives that promote the integration of socially vulnerable groups and their equal participation in artistic creation, the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation supported the implementation of αn educational animation workshop for adults with disabilities organised within the framework of the 16th International Animation Festival ANIMASYROS 2023, in collaboration with the Creative Employment Center for Children with Disabilities of the Municipality of Syros-Ermoupolis. The workshop is part of the annual informal education programme in the field of animation designed and implemented by the organisation as part of the Festival and is part of a group of inclusion actions aimed at empowering individuals facing social exclusion. During the workshop, participants had the opportunity to explore various animation techniques, develop their artistic skills, and socialise. The result of these creative encounters was the production of an original animated regarding the vessels of antiquity, drawing inspiration from the main artistic theme of the Festival, “Animation & Ancient Greece”.
“I have been coordinating the workshop for People with Disabilities for the past 7 years and I have developed a very close and pure relationship with all the participants -now, friends- involved in the workshop. No matter what happens in my professional life, I always make time to spend these creative days in Syros. It is fascinating to observe how far they have progressed in the artistic aspect and how much they feel part of not only the creative process of the film, but also of the Festival itself more broadly. Having a lot of experience in the field of disability and recognising the difficulties and lack of visibility that they face, especially in the regions of Greece, I feel that this workshop is truly a necessary creative pathway necessary for the participants.”

“Inclusion in Action” Educational-Artistic Programme
The John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation, as part of its broader strategy for the implementation of inclusive cultural actions, supported the implementation of the programme entitled “Inclusion in Action”, aiming to shape a culture of inclusion within the school community through children’s cinema. The Programme, designed in collaboration with accessibility consultants “liminal” and “TheHappyAct”, was launched in a pilot format in May 2023 and will run until the school year 2024-2025, with the goal of fostering audiovisual literacy and an inclusive mindset in primary school students. Within the framework of the Programme, students of General and Special Education schools have the opportunity to equally experience a shared inclusive cinematic journey by watching fully accessible short films at the Greek Film Archive. During the first stage of the Programme, preparatory workshops are held within the school units in order to familiarise students with various accessibility tools (SDH subtitles, Greek dubbing, interpretation in Greek Sign Language, audio description, sensory processing and social stories), while discussions and activities on the importance of inclusion follow after the educational screenings. Teachers also receive material with basic principles on how to discuss and approach disability, while the Fully Accessible Digital Screening Platform offers additional free accessible film content.
“The ‘Inclusion in Action’ programme offers teachers an opportunity for interaction between General and Special Education schools in joint activities focusing on Art. Students develop imagination, creativity, teamwork and an inclusive spirit of collaboration. We believe that the Programme provides an initial impetus to a culture of inclusion through the messages of short films and the interaction between Special and General Education schools in the preceding and subsequent activities that were carried out.”

SPECIAL OLYMPICS HELLAS
Educational-Sports Integration Programme for People with Intellectual Disabilities
Focusing on the support of initiatives that promote the empowerment and social inclusion of vulnerable social groups, the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation supported the programme “Special Olympics athletes break boundaries!”, aimed at the empowerment of girls and women with intellectual disabilities and their social integration through sports. Special Olympics Hellas is the largest and most active sports and educational non-profit organisation in Greece, and the only one specialising and focusing on the development and inclusion of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Through the Programme, the participants had the opportunity to learn about the 26 Olympic-type sports of Special Olympics, to participate in training programmes, sports activities and competitions of the organisation, and attend seminars on healthy nutrition, exercise, and sex education, while, at the same time, support is also provided to their family members. The implementation of this targeted Programme contributed both to improving the physical fitness and skills of the beneficiaries and to strengthening their self-confidence within an inclusive environment of acceptance and visibility.
“I became a Special Olympics athlete, learned to compete and my life changed. Through Special Olympics Hellas I learned that sport makes us happier people. But I also learned something else: that women are strong and can succeed. I go to my training, play Bocce, see my friends and look forward to competing with my team. By playing Bocce we encourage other girls to take up sports. I believe everyone in my family is very happy for me because they see me overcoming obstacles and continuing stronger in my life!”

Olympic Preparation Scholarship Programme
For the seventh consecutive year, the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation supported the Olympic Preparation Scholarship Programme of the A. G. Leventis Foundation, supporting athletes from Greece and Cyprus during their preparation for participation in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The Programme was co-funded by the Hellenic Olympic Committee, while for the first time, the Programme was also supported by the Cyprus Olympic Committee with the aim of supporting athletes representing all the Olympic Sports Federations of the country and to promote excellence and the Olympic values. The four institutions awarded a total of 58 scholarships to athletes who stood out for their performance in 2022. The Olympic Preparation Scholarship Programme of the A. G. Leventis Foundation has become a well-established institution as it has been supporting, for the last 24 years, those who train hard, often in unfavourable conditions, in order to be able to deservedly compete with the best of the world in the greatest celebration of athleticism, the Olympic Games, and inspire with their example the love for sports in our country.
“It’s very important for me to have received the scholarship through the Olympic Preparation Scholarship Programme, especially in a time when government funding is scarce, as it allows me to cope with the high level of competition. The World Championships and the Olympic Games I have participated in require the best physical and mental condition, and the endless hours of training often result in injuries and muscle problems. The financial support I receive gives me the opportunity to cover my physiotherapy sessions and achieve the best possible muscle recovery. I am grateful as this scholarship has helped me get one step closer to my dream.”

ORGANIZATION EARTH NPO
Creation of a Community Organic Vegetable Garden
“Organization Earth” aims to establish a sustainable way of thinking and interacting with the environment and society, through experiential non-formal education programmes for all ages and inclusion initiatives for vulnerable social groups. In this context, with the support of the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation, “Organization Earth” implemented its initiative of creating a Community Organic Vegetable Garden in the Municipality of Petroupolis, with significant social and environmental benefits for the residents. The main goal of the initiative is to enhance the resilience of the local community by promoting healthy nutrition and sustainable agriculture through the creation of an organic vegetable garden. The garden serves as a space for experiential education for citizens from vulnerable social groups who are responsible for its cultivation, as well as for students who reconnect with the land and learn about sustainable development. The Community Organic Vegetable Garden, designed by the community through participatory processes, offers residents of Petroupolis the opportunity to familiarise themselves with urban agriculture through educational workshops, to develop environmental awareness and green skills, to strengthen their social ties, while simultaneously improving their quality of life and the neighbourhood identity. Through this initiative, food security and empowerment of the participants is achieved, while part of the harvest is distributed to the community through the Social Grocery.
“Living in the city and having a piece of land that you can cultivate, to connect with the earth, and have your own organic produce is extremely important for the quality of life.”
Dimitra Koutsomitrou
Organic Farmer
“We hope that the Community Organic Vegetable Garden of the Municipality of Petroupolis will become a reference point and a meeting place for people with a passion and enthousiasm for gardening. Encouraging and exchanging experiences among growers, disseminating good organic practices, promoting the use of traditional vegetable varieties, and educating beneficiaries in proper agricultural practices are some of the goals we have set. In addition, by investing in the education of the new generation, we look forward to the participation of the city’s schools in environmental, recreational and social events, as well as the creation of School Vegetable Gardens. All participants are provided with free agronomic and advisory support for the cultivation care of their crops.”

HIGHER INCUBATOR GIVING GROWTH AND SUSTAINABILITY (HIGGS)
Empowerment Programmes for CSOs
The Higher Incubator Giving Growth & Sustainability (HIGGS) is an initiative aimed at empowering Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) operating in Greece, through educational and support programmes, activities and events held at its premises. With a vision to become a beacon of creation, development and open dialogue, contributing to the effective and sustainable operation of CSOs, HIGGS implemented its three core programmes in 2023, with the support of the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation and other donors, namely the “Incubator”, the “Green and Social Entrepreneurship (GSE) Incubator” and the “Accelerator” programmes.
These programmes provide CSOs with free, intensive training and specialised consultancy, along with opportunities for networking and collaboration with all stakeholders within the ecosystem. In particular, the “Incubator” training and consultancy programme is specifically designed for CSOs which are newly established or are in the process of being established, with the aim to help them build capacity in strategic planning, establishing the organisation, commencing operations, and attracting funding. The “Green and Social Entrepreneurship Incubator” programme is an evolution of the “Incubator”, offering seminars of a similar nature exclusively to organisations involved in social and green entrentrepreneurial activity and implementing environmental and sustainable development actions. The “Accelerator” programme is addressed to CSOs operating for a longer period of time, with the aim to provide them with support on issues related to their strategy, operation and the development of their proposals.
In addition, in 2023, with the support of the Foundation, the annual conference “Philanthropy 2.0 – The Importance of Social Impact” was held, which highlighted the role of CSOs in Greek society and the necessity of measuring their social impact. Furthermore, the organisation of the 7th Donors Speed Dating served as a meeting point and introduction of the Civil Society stakeholders within a context of exploring potential partnerships.
“‘Incubator’ is a must experience! It’s like a mini master’s degree in business administration with a strong experiential aspect. Meeting professionals who actively support you, both during and after the bootcamp, while sharing ideas, concepts and obstacles that will become bridges. Meeting people who will become your partners, supporters and friends in real life.”

Wildfires Response Extraordinary Programme
In the aftermath of the wildfires that struck Greece in August 2021, the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation implemented an emergency grants programme aimed at contributing to the long-term upgrading of prevention and firefighting mechanisms for wildfires, enhancing national fire readiness, providing immediate relief to those affected, and restoring the fire-stricken areas. Through thorough investigation and prioritisation of existing needs, the Foundation decided to implement a comprehensive bundle of targeted interventions along three areas: Prevention/Repression, Restoration, and Relief for fire-stricken areas. In this light, within 2023, the Foundation put into action the following grants:
“We received material support, namely firefighting uniforms, helmets, gloves and radios that we needed so much. Participation in and attendance at training workshops on how to prevent and respond to forest fires, along with said supply of material equipment, will help our volunteers to operate more effectively while remaining safe when participating in forest firefighting actions in the future.”
Michalis Kapetanakis
President, “Ena” Volunteer Civil Protection Team of the Association of Three Monasteries of the Municipality of Rethymnon
“It is a great pleasure and an honour for our team, and even more so for our homeland, to receive material support from the ‘Support Programme for Volunteer Forest Fire Protection Teams’. It provides us with the opportunity to continue doing what we love, what was the trigger for the creation of our team, what is our way of living: to serve our homeland as volunteers. This is the first time our contribution has received active appreciation, the first time that words have turned into actions; we would therefore like to thank you warmly and to assure you that we will put your support to good use.”
Panagiotis Englezos
President, Salakos Volunteer Disaster Response Team, Rhodes
“This donation has helped us significantly to cover our basic needs and continue to offer consistently and safely our volunteer services to our fellow citizens during the past fire season, but also during the upcoming seasons. We sincerely thank you.”

“If I had known, it wouldn’t have happened. Because of alcohol. I went to light up the stove and it backfired. The flame follows back the line of liquid, enters the bottle and explodes in my hands. During this extremely suffering that I am going through, Salvia is a companion in my life that has become my second family. They have been by my side since the beginning, and they remain forever. They have helped me a lot.”

“My daily communication with the Blood Donation Centres in Greece confirmed -first of all- the need for the development of an Appointment Booking Online Platform. Through the ‘Blood Donation 365’ initiative, a user-friendly platform was designed and created, which can be used by all 94 Blood Donation Centres, while also offering a secure way for those interested to schedule the blood donation appointments at a date and time of their choice. Our digital vision does not stop here – we will continue to invest in technology across all our activities, aiming to further improve the experience of volunteer blood donors and Blood Donation Centres.”
