Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation Unit – 2nd Department of Propedeutic Internal Medicine NKUA

In 2023, with a donation from the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation, the expansion and modernisation of the Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation Unit of the 2nd Department of Propedeutic Internal Medicine NKUA of the Hospital was carried out. This donation has allowed for the addition of modern medical equipment to the Unit in response to the increased needs of the Transplantation Laboratory. Moreover, part of the existing Unit has been reconfigured, allowing for the creation of two additional inpatient wards to support Hematopoietic Cell Transplants and overall improvement of the Unit’s functionality.

  • 20 additional patients will benefit annually from the upgrade of the Unit’s infrastracture, with the total number of patients served reaching approximately 65.

“The creation of two additional specially equipped transplantation wards and the enhancement of the Transplantation Laboratory with state-of-the-art, high-tech equipment will enhance the Unit’s capacity and will allow for the provision of high-quality healthcare services to more patients. In particular, the two new wards will allow for the administration of specialised treatment, such as allogeneic stem cell transplants, to about twenty additional patients per year, patients suffering from very serious and complicated diseases, such as hematological malignancies.”

Neonatal Intensive Care Unit – 3rd Pediatric Clinic NKUA

At the same time, the donation for the upgrading of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) was completed in 2023, which included the renovation of the three main rooms and the supply of necessary medical equipment. The donation was implemented in the framework of the 4th cycle of the “Collaborating for Health” programme, a joint initiative of the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation and the Greek Shipowners’ Social Welfare Company SYN-ENOSIS. The Programme, which has been implemented since 2018, consists in the financing of small and medium-scale projects, its aim being to meet urgent needs of the Public Health sector and to improve the services of healthcare providers in Greece, through the supply of medical equipment and the upgrading of their infrastructure.

  • Approximately 300 newborns per year are treated in the NICU.

“From my perspective as a pediatric infectious disease specialist, I would like to emphasise the contribution of this donation to the prevention of nosocomial infections and sepsis, which are significant factors in mortality and morbidity for these particularly vulnerable young patients. Although I am proud to report that, according to studies conducted over the past five years, the healthcare staff of the Unit consistently represents the leading team in adhering to hygiene measures throughout our Hospital, the reconstruction of the Unit with the installation of the medical columns has further enhanced the care of each newborn and thus significantly reduced the likelihood of transmission of microbial agents among hospitalised newborns.”
