The John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation is continuing for a second year its initiative to exclusively fund a series of summer schools focused on the environment. This year from July 1 to July 15, the 2nd International Summer School on the Environment will be held on the Foundation’s premises. It will concentrate on ''Mediterranean Marine Ecosystems: Functioning and Evolution'' and will be organized by the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR) – Institute of Oceanography.

The objective of the 2nd International Summer School is to advance the scientific knowledge of 30 postgraduate students from Greece and abroad through lectures delivered by well-known scientists in the field on the following subjects:

  • Mediterranean and World Ocean: Similarities, Differences and Peculiarities
  • Food Webs in Mediterranean Marine Ecosystems
  • Biodiversity, Non-indigenous Species
  • Population Outbreaks (i.e. jellyfish)
  • Extreme Environments in the Mediterranean (Brine lakes, volcanoes, mud volcanoes etc.)
  • Costal Zones : Pressures and Habitat Fragmentation
  • Oceanography From Space
  • Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs)
  • Fisheries and Productivity
  • Impacts of Climate Change on the Ecosystems, Acidification
  • Socioeconomic Scenarios


There are no participation fees and all applications for the Summer School must be received by April 23, 2010.
