The John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation has made a donation to “ATTIKON” General University Hospital of Athens, aiming at the expansion and modernisation of the Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation Unit (HCTU) of the 2nd Department of Propedeutic Internal Medicine of the University of Athens. This donation has allowed for the addition of modern medical equipment to the Unit in response to the increased needs of the Transplantation Laboratory. Moreover, part of the existing Unit has been reconfigured, allowing for the creation of two additional inpatient wards to support Hematopoietic Cell Transplants.

Referring to the donation, the Director of “ATTIKON” General University Hospital, Mr Spyridon Apostolopoulos noted that:

“Strengthening the special healthcare units that provide innovative medical services is paramount for the modernisation of the healthcare system. The donation by the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation serves this purpose and, in that regard, on behalf of the Hospital’s management, I would like to convey our sincere gratitude.”

Professor Panagiotis Tsirigotis, Academic Supervisor of the Unit, stated that:

“The creation of two additional specially equipped transplantation wards and the enhancement of the Transplantation Laboratory with state-of-the-art, high-tech equipment will enhance the Unit’s capacity and will allow for the provision of high-quality healthcare services to more patients. In particular, the two new wards will allow for the administration of specialised treatment, such as allogeneic transplants, to about twenty additional patients per year, patients suffering from very serious and complicated diseases, such as haematological malignancies.”

On behalf of the Foundation, Dr Petros Kalantzis, President of the Executive Board, noted that:

“The modernisation of the Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation Unit of ‘ATTIKON’ University General Hospital is part of a long-standing coordinated effort of ours, aiming at targeted interventions in the National Healthcare System. This particular donation to ‘ATTIKON’ Hospital follows a similar donation made in 2014 by our Foundation to the University General Hospital of Patras to upgrade the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit. We hope that this new donation, too, will give life and hope to dozens of our fellow citizens in the coming years and will alleviate the complex workload of the Hospital’s medical and nursing staff.”
