International Museum Day 18 May 2021 – Presentation of the digital tour of the National Historical Museum’s anniversary exhibition
On the occasion of the celebration of 2021 International Museum Day, themed ‘The Future of Museums: Recover and Reimagine’, the National Historical Museum (NHM), which has been selected by the Greek branch of ICOM as this year’s honoured museum, presents the digital tour of its main anniversary exhibition ‘REVOLUTION ‘21 REFRAMED’ which sheds light to previously unknown aspects of the Greek Revolution, through the stories contained in 80 artefacts.
The digital tour is open to both on site and online visitors of the exhibition. For the time being, it comprises 57 points of interest with representative exhibits from the 7 sections of the exhibition. Each exhibit is presented through images, text (Greek, English) and audio. The points of interest will expand gradually.
The Tour Experience makes some of the exhibition’s points of interest accessible for a 360 virtual tour. Thus, users get to experience the exhibition as if they were physically there.
The digital tour will be accessible from 18 May 2021 via the new NHM website.
In the framework of the bicentennial celebrations, in response to the increasing needs for remote communication, and in order to reach a wider audience, the NHM has invested in an improvement its online profile.
The narrative of the Main Exhibition of the anniversary programme ‘REVOLUTION '21 REFRAMED’ is complemented by a wealth of audiovisual materials and interactive digital exhibits. Visitors are given the opportunity to interact with them; they are thus introduced to the lifestyle, the events, the armaments of the Struggle for freedom, as well as the Press of the Revolution, by choosing themselves their object of interest among a wide range of information. Moreover, the interactive ‘Rigas Charta’ exhibit allows for a documented and comprehensible presentation of the Modern Greek Enlightenment era.
The Main Exhibition takes place in the framework of the ‘Bicentennial Initiative 1821-2021’, with funding by John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation and with the technological support of the Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH); as for the interactive ‘Rigas Charta’ exhibit, it was implemented with the support of J.F. Costopoulos Foundation. These interactive exhibits will also travel around Greece, through the regional exhibitions of the ‘REVOLUTION ’21 REFRAMED’ programme.
During the pandemic, the NHM has tried to broaden its communication with the public by using the potential of digital technology. It has designed a new, modern website, which was launched on 25 March 2021. Moreover, it has built up its presence on social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) through regular, theme-based and historically documented posts (#Sansimera, #IxeresOti) which seek to present unpublished items from its collections, and to bring the public closer to the original sources of modern Greek history.
