In accordance with the initial timetable, the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation announces today the 19 studies selected for funding in 2011. The response of the scientific community to the public call announced by the Foundation was impressive. Indeed, 1,030 proposals were submitted, which is a record number in the 4 years that the one-year Programme for the Funding of Scientific Projects has been running. The distribution of proposals per scientific field is as follows:
Social and Human Sciences: 412 proposals
Science: 249 proposals
Life Sciences: 369 proposals
The Programme’s Scientific Committee evaluated the proposals and issued a recommendation to the Foundation’s Executive Board. The evaluation was a very difficult process as the final selection had to be made out of a large number of excellent proposals submitted by the candidates. It was decided to fund 19 proposals; the main selection criteria were the scientific quality, the originality and methodology of each study, the specialisation and research experience of the members of each team, the participation of young researchers and the diffuse potential of the final product. The proposals that qualified for the 2011 Studies Programme cover a wide range of scientific fields, and in order for them to be implemented, the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation will cooperate with 14 academic institutions and research centres in our country and abroad, and a total of 81 scientists/researchers will be participating.
