The general purpose of ''Aquaponics Farming Systems'' educational activity, which was implemented in the framework of the programme ''Learning Together'', was to introduce children to the environmental, nutritional and economic value of aquaponics systems, teach them about the care for and maintenance of such systems, and allow them to experience the joy of agricultural production and actively participate in actions to inform the local community on issues related to the preservation of ecosystems and alternative farming methods.
The educational programme was based on the extensive experience of operation and maintenance of a small aquaponics system installed in an indoor area of the school. The aquaponics system was relocated to an outdoor greenhouse space to achieve plant production and to make it more spacious and more easily accessible to students and visitors. The project culminated in the creation of a fully functional aquaponics system which is open to the community; this system is a point of reference for educational interventions aiming at explaining concepts such as sustainable production, bio-economy and organic farming.
The educational activity was presented to the general public in the framework of the 7th Rafina – Pikermion Student Festival on 5-6 May 2018. Students received visitors at the school’s stand, where they gave detailed presentations of the benefits and operation of the aquaponics systems and answered questions.
85 students from the 4th and 5th grade of primary school took part in this activity.
