Following the allocation of a dedicated space within the Latsio Burn Centre at the “Thriasio” General Hospital of Eleusis for the establishment of the Special Unit for Neuromuscular Diseases of the MDA Hellas Association, the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation supported the operation of the Unit within the year 2023, covering the necessary staffing costs and ensuring its proper operation. In the fully accessible and equipped Unit, four outpatient clinics (Neurology, Cardiology, Pulmonology and Orthopedics) operate according to the standards of the Centers of Expertise for Rare Diseases, providing adults suffering from neuromuscular diseases with a holistic framework of medical care. The multidisciplinary team of the Unit, consisting of healthcare professionals from various specialties, delivers high-quality diagnostic and care services, systematically monitoring patients and offering psycho-social support to both patients and their families, aiming to improve their quality of life.
34 patients have been treated in the new Unit, since its opening in September, until December 2023.
Approximately 300 adult patients in the wider area of the Attica region will benefit annually from the services offered by the Unit.
“The new Neuromuscular Diseases Unit of MDA Hellas at the Thriasio Hospital is a focal point for my health and quality of life. Unfortunately, the complexity of my condition requires the cooperation of specialised scientists, not only for healing, but also for predicting the development of a problem. The new Unit does just that: it covers, through a team of scientists of different specialties (such as cardiologist, pulmonologist, neurologist, physiotherapist, etc.), any immediate need I have, not only through examinations, therapeutic intervention and application of preventive methods, but also through personal contact and psychological support! I no longer have to search for doctors and coordinate specialties and appointments, nor do I need to travel long distances to their clinics. Now, in a modern, friendly space, I am systematically monitored by a specialised scientific team of doctors who treat me holistically, not just as a case mentioned in the literature, looking beyond my disease and providing me a reliable therapeutic approach.”
